Why have a massage?

Gone is the sleazy image of back street massage parlors, often offering a service that had little to do with massage. Now we have entered the era of "bodywork" and the very up market "Spa". Health spas have burgeoned over the past decade and today no up-market hotel would dream of being without a "spa" geared to the fitness requirements of a very health conscious clientele.

At the top of the list of services offered by these "spas," is massage.

What can you expect then, when you go along for a massage for the first time? Firstly, the masseur of masseuse will be a qualified therapist who has spent a considerable amount of time and resources qualifying in this, their chosen field.

The massage rooms will be subtly and comfortably lighted and there will usually be soft music playing in the background. The therapist will welcome you and then invite you to undress and offer a warm towel so that there will be no need to feel any embarrassment.

You will notice that the room is pleasantly warm and at first it might feel it is overheated but as the massage progresses you will find that the temperature is exactly right to keep you comfortable.

Another thing that you will notice is the therapy room is generally spotlessly clean, the

decor will be tasteful and everything will have been designed to make you feel as

comfortable and at ease as possible. More often than not the therapist will use aromatherapy, or essential oils both to apply on you as the client and to scent the room. The oils will be specially selected to relax you and induce a sense of comfort and serenity. The oils are never applied directly onto the body as this is likely to cause a skin

reaction. Instead they will be mixed with a neutral base and applied in a dilute form

on the body.

In the case of a full body massage, the masseur will ask you to lie on your stomach and will start gently massaging the shoulders and upper regions. You will relax deeper and deeper as the massage progresses and all those knots and sore places which have come about as the result of stress and the rigors of every day life will gradually begin to disappear.

Very often the client will drift off in to a gentle doze as the massage progresses and will be gently brought back to wakefulness when the time comes to turn over and allow the front of the body to be kneaded and smoothed by the by the deft hands of the therapist.

When the massage is over the client will feel a heightened sense of relaxation and will more often than not float out of the body worker's room as if on air! This is a truly an experience that once enjoyed will cause the client to return time and again. Why? Because massage is one of the best means of combating the stresses and strains of a stressful world.
